Bringing citizen participation to life
MyCityMyBudget (MCMB) is an annual, city-wide campaign that ensures first-mile democracy by enabling citizens to engage in their city’s budgeting process. The campaign was conceptualised and executed by Janaagraha in collaboration with the city government of Bengaluru, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
MCMB makes participatory budgeting a reality by ensuring that the voices and infrastructure priorities of citizens are reflected in the budget and that budget allocations are made based on the needs of the city and her citizens.
The MCMB campaign is currently operational in Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Kalaburagi.
Every year, citizen inputs on civic issues are collected online and offline (through a Budget Bus that travels across wards in the city). Budget inputs are analyzed and consolidated into a report that is then submitted to the City Government by citizens. Once the government presents the city budget, it is analysed to track allocations for budget inputs.
The campaign involves the mobilisation of various community and volunteer groups, resident welfare and apartment associations, and groups representing senior citizens, transgenders, city workers, and communities across different social and economic lines.
